2016 - Doing it again!!
In celebration, I am rocking and/or rolling this year!
2011... 1 hour after finish. A HUGE thanks to Andy Samford, who volunteered to download my tracks, burn them to CD and ship them out for me. With the encouragement of Jack in the RPM irc chat room I finished the mixes with a minute to spare, but wont have the scratch to send it in til later in the week. Then Andy shows up and offeres... how damn cool is that?! Thanks man!
2011... 1 hour to finish. And I am not going to make it. For the first time since I started RPM I won't be sending an album. The songs are weakish, more partial fragments than songs and the sound quality is below sub par. I will take these and work on them more down the road a ways, but it wont happen for RPM 11... it is a sad day overall. I reflect on the passing of my grandmother on this day so many years ago, the failures in my social life in the past year and other things, and I realize that not completeing RPM is only a minor failure in comparison. Next year! Hopefully next year will be better! Here's to those who finished, and those who did not, come back and try again with me!
At the start of 2011:
2011... 23 hours to start and all my gear is at the shop, this is the last gasp for south house studios as the bank seems to want it back more than our payments. It's been a damn rough year... and its going to be a weird album. Reaper, a few VST instruments and some creative misuse of a usb headset mic is about all I have on hand, so who knows how dang weird this one is going to end up.
Sadly, without the proper gear, "Not Forgotten" will have to wait a few more months. I don't even have a working title at this writing, nor even a direction. All I know is time is short, I'm low on coffee and wondering what musical magic will happen this year.
Last year I scribbled:
Well, that didn't come out as planned... several critical tracks for the orginal idea just wouldn't come together, while others lept to the fore. This year had a number of computer problems, and very little recording time, so the disk was just very rough demos, and on some tracks simply fragments of time represented as audio.
Not to worry... the planned album is still going to happen, it will just take a bit longer, and then these songs will be folded in as well, if they fit.
Here was what I orginally had in mind:
Last year's project "Not Forsaken" was a bit of a hodgepodge, but I knew in the middle of it it would need a second go to complete the story arc that I had in mind.
This year, I have the concepts from last year already in my head for "Not Forgotten" which picks up right at the end of last year's "The final show" form Not Forsaken.
I suspect there will be some veering off the main path here as well, and eventually I plan to combine the two discs's songs into "Not Forsaken...Not Forgotten" and rerecord the whole with more time taken to polish and complete what was in essence, demos.
So I have the roadmap, tune in in March to see just how lost I became!
In 2009 I scribbled:
This year's project should be different than last, by a long shot. But who knows? Last year I went in thinking we were doing a big, dumb rock record and ended up with (extremely) raw, simple blues.
This year ended up being an introspective, light from darkness journey. Some is autobiographical, some is just music.
This time around we discovered the world of synth music as well, and combined them with another new found sound - slide guitar. I just picked the slide up a few days before RPM 09, and have not yet sorted out all of what it can and can't do, but it was explored a great deal.
Last year I scribbled:
Music to shape metal by.
Shop songs to sing to amuse myself.
Not that it might be "metal" music per se, but music made by blacksmiths to play in the shop while we pound out hot steel into something artistic. Or sharp. Sharp is good too.
