am/fm dreams	Invisible Hand	The original plans for this REM Challenge was to write and record a new song each month as a continuation of our February Imaginary Islands album. March had different plan in mind leaving me sitting at the piano pouring out my heart in the form of a last minute new song called "Mint", recorded in one take, live to my iPad. Usually we record to a digital 8 track, layer track on tracks, mix and edit. There a something about the stripped down, raw sound of "Mint" that I was really drawn to. It got me thinking, no one really does that anymore. Putting one, live, unrehearsed take out into the world for everyone to hear has a certain vulnerability to it. The closest thing to it would be a live show, which due to COVID are few and far between. So I decided this month to do another, last minute, one take recording live to iPad again. This time however I didn't write a new song, but rather did a live acoustic version of "Invisible Hand" from our 2008 RPM debut. The original is more punk rockish. Third monthly piece we've done for the RPM Challenge, third 35 minute ear-bleeder. Okay, this one isn't a complete sonic barrage, it has troughs and peaks, but it's still noise-based, it's not Mantovani, is it? Last time, we used samples of a pneumatic drill (of which 'Criminal Duplet' is a pretty damned clever anagram),this time it's a mitre saw (yes, 'Wartimes', it's an anagram too, but no prizes). We're actually feeling quite disposed to doing a whole series of these, then releasing all of them in one aural package of extraordinary magnitude come next March, when it's all over. And we're thinking of doing it under a banner title which will be a nod to the very RPM Challenge that inspired us to do it. We raise a glass to you, Elling!
