Music for Heists, Volume One: Art and Jewels was recorded between January 31, 2023 and February 1, 2023 (US EST) for the 2023 RPM Challenge. This album is an attempt to treat the act of composition and recording as a conversation instead of trying to carve out a permanent sonic monument. Each of these songs was composed and performed with focused intent to communicate a transient experience, thought, or belief, and to honor the process of exploration and creation.
Favourite Moment
I limited myself to a few synthesizers for this record, but I didn't approach it with the intent of musical cohesion, and I was honestly worried that when the record was complete, it would sound very disjointed, but after I had finishing producing and mixing all the songs, I went to master it, and I was really pleasantly surprised that I was able to bring it together cohesively.
Advice
I did the RPM this year in basically two days of nonstop, focused improvisation and work. I built up the event as something really special to try to push through as a single event, and I think the process was far more enjoyable, and the results better, than previous attempts.
