This is my fifteenth RPM Challenge. I typically write electronic music with soft synths and sampled instruments. This year I challenged myself to use the various acoustic instruments I’ve collected over the years, and in many cases only barely know how to play. Working so far out of my wheelhouse, combined with a particularly rough year psychologically, I had a hard time getting motivated to complete 10 songs like I originally intended. Rather than give up, I gave myself to submit and EP instead of an Album. (This is fair, I think, since I completed a Boxed Set last year!)
When I made my peace with submitting "only" an EP, and finally completed my five songs, then rolled out the cover art, I felt the same satisfaction I've felt every year, like I had truly completed something special to me, rather than going through the motions. It's the mindset that matters, not the content or length!
Don't be afraid to change your approach, or even your final goal.
